What Jobs Can I Find on a Superyacht?

Are you wondering if you will fit in as a crew on a superyacht and get the amazing lifestyle it offers? Check what is available and which job sounds like most fun to you

So, what kind of jobs can you find on these luxurious boats? Let’s have a look at the main selection. Most superyachts have got four departments you can choose to work in, each offering its own career path and incentives, and requiring different skillsets, experience and training.

INTERIOR

Most positions offered in this department are of the Steward/Stewardess. They are responsible for service and housekeeping. You will also have most interactions with the billionaire guests onboard.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • serving meals, drinks and snacks to the guests
  • daily housekeeping and of guest cabins and bathrooms (called heads) as well as all the rest of the interior and crew area
  • laundry and ironing
  • organizing or booking events and entertainment for the guests as required
  • keeping inventory of all the interior items
  • purchasing drinks, snacks, cleaning products and interior items

Depending on the size of the yacht you will either be responsible for the whole spectrum of jobs or you will be working in a team with all the duties divided according to the rank.

BENEFITS OF THE JOB
  • working closely with the guests you will have a chance to get to know them and you will make friends with some of them
  • looking after the most luxurious interiors, you will be organising them and even buying more items, which means shopping in expensive home centres with the yacht credit card
  • looking after designer clothing you will be the first in line to get the items that the lady guests no longer want or like
  • serving the most expensive wines and drinks you will get a good knowledge of them, often during tasting sessions…

USEFUL PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Previous hotel, waiting staff or any other customer service experience is helpful, but even without it you can still work as a stewardess. In this case you might consider completing a course for a yacht stewardess to increase your chances of getting a job and make it easier for yourself when you start working on a yacht.

GALLEY

Galley means kitchen in yachting terminology, so here you will work as a Chef. You will be responsible for food preparation for both the crew and the guests.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • planning menus for guests and crew
  • purchasing all the ingredients
  • preparing and cooking all meals and snacks for guests and crew
  • cleaning the galley
  • organising food and storage items
  • keeping inventory of galley items

Depending on the size of the boat you will either be working in a team of two or three, where the duties are divided but also higher standards are required. Most superyachts only employ one chef and in this case you will be responsible for everything.

USEFUL PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Culinary training and restaurant experience will be extremely beneficial. However, if you love cooking and you are confident in your skill but you don’t have any formal training in these area, you can also look for a cook job on a yacht. It will take you a bit longer to get to a chef position, but with good career planning you will get there after a few seasons.

DECK

The career path in the Deck department can go as high as the Captain, however, you need to start it as a Deckhand or a Junior Deckhand and work your way up getting tickets, skills and experience along the way.

  • Cleaning and maintenance of the exterior of the yacht
  • Cleanliness and maintenance of water toys, such as jet skis, tenders, paddle boards etc.
  • Assisting the Captain with navigation/sailing and all yacht maneuvers
  • Assisting guests with using water toys
  • Driving the tender
  • Assisting in other departments

As in the case of all other jobs onboard, you might be working as a sole deckhand performing all these duties or in a team being responsible only for a part of them.

  • part of your responsibilities will be playing water toys with guest kids
  • driving/sailing the superyacht
USEFUL PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Sailing skills are obviously extremely beneficial in this position, however, not crucial at the beginning of your career. If you can’t sail, you can still find a job on deck and get all the necessary qualifications between the jobs. Water sports instructor, lifeguard but even customer service experience are also beneficial in this position.

ENGINE ROOM

Here you will work as an Engineer, which is one of the most responsible and demanding jobs on a yacht as it includes the maintenance of all the systems onboard. It also offers a great career and salaries.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • safe and efficient running of the yacht
  • maintenance of all the systems onboard: mechanical, electrical, electronic, plumbing and computer systems
  • sanitation and environmental control
  • cleanliness and maintenance in the engine room

Here also the scope of your responsibilities depends on the size of the yacht. On smaller yachts you will be responsible for everything on larger ones you will be working in a highly hierarchical team.

USEFUL PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

In the case of engineering positions unless you have a marine engineering background and education, you will have to complete a professional course in order to start working on superyachts. If you come from other engineering background, you have to do extra courses to be able to work on a superyacht, but you might start with the higher position. If you don’t have any engineering education you can still do the course and start your engineering career on superyachts.
